What Would It Look Like If You Prioritized Yourself?

Mom, Wife, friend, student, employee…just some of the terms that we all go by. All are important and makeup who we are. However, many times they start to define us and we lose ourselves. The dictionary defines self as, “a person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action”.

Growing up people take care of you, making sure you have shelter, food, education, friends, fun etc.. All of this comes from having parents with multiple roles…employee, mom, wife etc.. Why is it that when we are adults, we find it so difficult to take care of ourselves first? and that doing so sometimes makes us seem selfish? Because we have given ourselves so many roles and society paints the picture that we need to be all in, for all of them! So, I ask you, if you give all of yourself to others, all the time, what is left? An empty cup and you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Imagine that you had 30 minutes per day just for you. This means free of kids, work and honey-do’s. What would you do? How would you feel? I bet you would feel refreshed, less stressed, calmer and more energetic. Doesn’t that sound amazing?

I am a mom, wife, marketing director, blogger and health coach. All make up who I am and all give me a sense of satisfaction, make me happy but and keep me very busy. However, I try to make time to do a 10-20 minute meditation and a 30 minute workout per day. I also take a a few hours each weekend to have coffee with my girlfriends. These things fill up my cup and give me a break from the things that keep me busy.

You might be a mom, wife, employee etc.. but you are so much more, you are “you” and you deserve to operate from a full cup. In fact your family and your work deserve that you as well. You will be a better mom, wife, employee and everything else in life if you take care of yourself first.
